The king’s court in Paris in the early fourteenth century seethed with politics, lust, betrayal and, occasionally, brilliance. Philippe le Bel is king he had an ongoing dispute with England, mounted a war against Flanders, and may well have killed the pope, allowing for his own choice, Clement, to become pope and move the Papal See to Avignon. He expelled the Jews from France and annihilated the order of the Knights Templar. His final year saw a scandal in the royal family, during which his three daughters-in-law were accused of adultery… and adultery is treason when the sons of kings are being betrayed.

So it was that Philippe le Bel had to sit in judgment on his daughters- in-law, and condemn them to life in prison. He did not live long enough to regret his decision. Jacques de Molay’s prediction came true a few months after the princesses’ trial, Philippe le Bel died. The mentally deficient Louis of Navarre became king upon his father’s death, and his first official act was to have Marguerite of Burgundy strangled in her prison cell.

The Crown and the Kingdom edition by Jeannette de Beauvoir Literature Fiction eBooks

I really enjoyed this book and was sorry to see it come to an end. It provided an extremely interesting biography of three French princesses from Burgundy in the 14th century. It also covered several political issues encountered by King Phillipe of France and gave interesting insight into the relationships of many in his Court. The character development was outstanding and the reader felt they knew Princesses Marguerite, Jeanne and Blanche as they grew up and married in to the Royal Family of France. This book provides a good deal of history in addition to telling the interesting story about these three young woman and I would highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys historical fiction. My only criticism of this book was the occasional typographical/grammatical error, and it seemed at times to jump erratically from one scene to another with no transition, which was sometimes confusing. Other than those issues, I would have rated this wholeheartedly 5 stars.

The Crown and the Kingdom edition by Jeannette de Beauvoir Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I would highly recommend this book. It was an interesting story to begin with but reading this story from different points of view made it even better. Highly recommended
This self published historical fiction starts off lacking in the depth that it ends up providing. With professional editing, spell check and appropriate break points this author could be at the top. However, it is still an excellent read of this exciting time in history and recemmended for readers of the genre.
It takes a well written book to capture my attention and "The Crown and the Kingdom" is one of those books. Period specific writing and vivid details capture your imagination as you read about history in France in the later 1200-early 1300s. Romance, intrigue and family dynamics make this book one of the most captivating reads of the decade.
The author has smart insights into the psychology of politics, valid across the history of humankind. She also obviously understands this particular moment in history, and she conveys that knowledge within the context of the story, without hitting you over the head with it. It informs the story and the characters; it doesn't overwhelm them.

Above all, Jeannette is a masterful storyteller with a smooth writing style.

If you aren't fond of historical fiction, give this one a try. If you're a fan of historical fiction, definitely try this one. If you just want a well written story which develops a cast of dimensional characters set in a properly sized universe, pick this up. After reading this book, I'll follow Jeannette anywhere her stories want to take me.

The Crown and the Kingdom
I do really like Medieval times and the feeling of that time in history, so, I generally read fiction about it. History has always been quite a boring subject to me. Well... I find that if all my history books were written with the zeal and power that this book by Jeannette Angell is written, I may have become a history major in school. I sure am glad that she was.
I did not want it to end. The characters were really bizarre, yet once lived. The back stories of all of them throughout these events in history seemed like fiction but were actually true! Wow!
A well researched novel of the story behind the creation of France, told just the way it was with all it's evil secrets, it's barbarianism, it's affairs, lust and manipulations and lice! Always lice!
I ate this book up! Yummie!
