I bought this book for a daughter and she loves it! I like the honesty and dedication in this book. The Entertainment industry is competitive with more concern for the dollar than the performer. Kylie is concerned with a variety of needs, not just on the outside. She speaks as an industry insider to the young people who are interested in pursuing a career in Modeling.Listen, Ladies (and Gents), when you are becoming too thin, your body doesn't burn fat anymore. Yes, that's right; instead, it burns muscle. The reason your body starts burning muscle is that it is trying to keep your heart and your lungs alive. Your heart is also a muscle. Think about that. You don't have to be starved to be a model. Eating Disorders affect up to 24 million Americans and 70 million individuals worldwide, 10 to 15% are estimated to be male, 90% of those who have eating disorders are female between 12 and 25 years old, and young women with anorexia are 12 times more likely to die than her non-anorexic peers. Vitamin and mineral deficiency is another result of a lack of food, and can lead to anemia, diarrhea, rashes, edema and heart failure. Carre' Otis reveals that her teeth and nails were breaking down and were corrected in photos and with on-site manicures. It all started with a Tweet “I quit being a VS model to become a Proverbs 31 wife.” Kylie Bisutti had no idea anyone would want to hear her story, but once they read that simple message, they did. So she told it in her book, "I’m No Angel From Victoria’s Secret Model to Role Model."
The beauty in this story is all in God’s patient work in one young woman’s life and in her obedient response. Kylie loves the Lord. She loves her husband. She cares about young women, like herself, who are being pressured to do whatever it takes to be beautiful in the world’s eyes. Kylie's eyes were opened when her eight-year-old cousin threatened to stop eating, so she could grow up to be beautiful like Kylie. Kylie decided that being a Victoria’s Secret model wasn’t the kind of model she wanted to be. "I’m No Angel" is her testimony.
The book concludes with a "30-Day True Beauty Makeover" a daily devotional, divided into five relevant sections, to help young women develop truly beautiful lives as they seek God’s will for their lives. Each message is profoundly simply, focusing on one important truth. Women who wrestle with self-esteem issues will benefit from reading this bonus section of the book.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys biographies and testimonies of God’s work in His people's lives.
Kylie takes the reader through her experiences as a model, from her first audition to the Victoria Secret runway and everything that came between. Her story was fascinating. It was eye opening. I didn't know that models got started so young. I was horrified at the things that these young girls were expected and pressured to do. I thought that America had laws against children being photographed in provocative poses without much (or anything) for clothing on. Kylie talks about her mistakes, her budding faith, and her hard work to get to the top of the modeling industry.
She talks about how she compromised her beliefs in favor of her career. She tried to rationalize away the prickling of her conscience. As an outsider reading her story, I could see the blaring oxymoron that her life had become. On the one hand she was trying to be a good Christian and draw closer to God. On the other hand, she was selling sex. But it isn't easy to see those things when you are the person going through it. Kylie shares her struggles, her triumphs, and her epiphany when she realized that her two lives could never work together. She had to pick one or the other.
This book is worth the read. Kylie shares her testimony about respecting yourself, your family, and God by dressing modestly and making sure your actions coincide with your beliefs. I work with a group of young girls in my church and Kylie's testimony gave me some great material to share with them. Hopefully her experience will help them understand the importance of respecting the beautiful bodies that God created for them.
Content The author shares her experiences, even the uncomfortable ones, but she manages to give the situation without going overboard on the details. It's pretty clean, but read it first if you are thinking of giving it to your teen.
