In No Shortage of Good Days John Gierach takes listeners from the Smokies in Tennessee to his home waters in Colorado, from the Canadian Maritimes to Mexico - saltwater or fresh, it's all fishing and all irresistible. As always he writes perceptively about a wide range of subjects the charm of familiar waters, the etiquette of working with new fishing guides, night fishing when the trout and the mosquitoes are both biting, and fishing snobbery, a pitfall he seems to have largely avoided. "A friend and I recently realized that making fly-fishing a way of life instead of a hobby has made us a couple of pretty one-dimensional characters. On the other hand, we agreed we're two of the happiest people we know, albeit in a simple-minded sort of way."

Gierach again demonstrates the wit, eloquence, and insight that have become his trademarks. No Shortage of Good Days is the next best thing to a day of fishing.

Gierach does get better with age. I read his early books voraciously, back when my own flyfishing was young and green, and it's hard to overstate the influence they had on my fishing, both in style and attitude. I think Gierach did that for a lot of us, sort of the way William Harnden Foster did for grouse hunters and Datus Proper for pheasant hunters (Proper's book Pheasants of the Mind is still the single best book on outdoor sport I've ever read). Then, somewhere along the line, I stopped reading Gierach, missed three or four books in a row. I'll go back now, having read No Shortage of Good Days, and get the ones I missed. Because this is an evolved, mature--and, to give in to cliche again--mellowed Gierach. I don't know why I thought he wouldn't have grown over the years. Anyway, this book got me back onto the Gierach track, made me remember why I'd once read--and re-read--him so avidly.

No Shortage of Good Days (Audible Audio Edition) John Gierach Mike Chamberlain Tantor Audio Books Reviews

This is a great read, highly recommend it. Full of funny anecdotes and comments. He makes you feel like you are along for the ride. Sounds like my kind of guy and a good book for all trout bums. Sorry I waited so long to finally get one of his books but will be ordering more post haste.
I have been told that John Gierach is the only fishing writer who makes his entire income solely from writing. If you have not picked up any of his books, I would highly recommend that you start with his earlier work, "Trout Bum" and you can see the adventures of a a younger man who decides life is more important doing the things you love rather than having to do a 8-5 pm schedule. I have purchased and read everyone of his books and often visit them to get a different perspective on my next visit. I rate the quality of a writer on not how quickly you want to get through the book but rather knowing the book will soon end and the need to savor every phrase and page until the inevitable end of the book. If you enjoy fly fishing and the outdoors, John Gierach is as good as it gets...
Gierach has written several fly fishing books that recount tales and observations of his friends and situations they have encountered, good and bad. I enjoy his simple storytelling style and his reflections on his successes and failures. I think I own all his books and this is a welcome addition to the collection.
Vintage Gierach, for better and for worse. I feel like his schtick is starting to get a little bit old (hippie philosophizing, Luddite jokes, lots of industry name-dropping, I-lost-the-big-one stories, etc) but he means well, he's a pretty good writer, and sometimes when you can't get to the water it's better than nothing...
Hey, how are you. I'm ok. Rivers are to cold to wade and the wind eliminates the drift boat so no fishing. How is your water these days?
I enjoy fly fishing but am a long way from an expert in fact after 50 years of fishing I'm still struggling to reach novice status. I did not purchase this book to instruct on how to fish but for it's entertainment value. This book turned out to be one of the most comfortable and pleasant fly fishing adventure books I've read. You can sit down on any evening and read a section finishing up with a desire to get out on the water and cast a few flys yourself.
My dad taught me to fly-fish and gave me my own bamboo rod at the age of 6.
I have such wonderful memories of fishing with my father and when life took me in different directions, I longed for those golden days.

Three years ago, I met a fisherman who enjoys fishing the small streams and ponds like I do and has traveled with me to New York and Pennsylvania for trout , to Alaska to fish for salmon and to the Everglades to fish for Largemouth Bass.

We were supposed to take a fly-fishing vacation to Yellowstone for the month of August and were all set to go when he had to go to the hospital. He has been there for 25 days and feels like he is under "house arrest".

Our only escape is a Gierach book, read off the new I just bought for him.
Gierach captures all that we feel about being out there and we are fishing with him from the hospital bed.

Thanks, John for setting us free!
